Brett Veach crossed another need of his off-season wish list and in a big way in the form of big man Kingsley Suamataia. Veach made headlines Friday night with another trade up acquiring the No. 63 overall pick; this time with the Super Bowl San Francisco 49ers. He was named second-team All-Big 12 in 2023 for the BYU Cougars. A former 5 star recruit and Oregon transfer, Saumataia is exactly the kid the Chiefs coveted. For those that don’t know, BYU is Andy Reid’s alma mater. Reid knows the BYU football program inside and out. He knows the type of player he is and can grow to be.
What Veach has done with his first two selections in this draft needs to be applauded. Yes, he is trading away assets by moving up to grab guys like Xavier Worthy and Kingsley Suamataia, but these are premium positions and positions of need for the Chiefs. They aren’t moving mountains for a guard or a linebacker, they are going after young blue-chip prospects who have uncapped ceilings.
What stands out to me about Suamataia is that he is a one of one athlete. He moves very well for his 6″6′ 324 lbs frame. Bruce Feldman wrote an article for the Athletic ranking his “Football Freaks” coming into the 2023 college football season. Out of 101 college football players in 2023, Feldman had Suamataia ranked number three. Let me give you some highlights from that piece:
Kingsley Suamataia is the most athletic and violent OL I’ve ever coached. More athletic than Garett Bolles when I was at Utah. More athletic than Blake Freeland.

Kingsley is off the charts,” BYU sports scientist Skyler Mayne says. “He’s faster than our linebackers. He’s just a Freak in the weight room.

Suamataia has his own family tree in the NFL, with four cousins in the league currently; most notably his cousin who is already a household name. “Big shout out to cousin Peniei,” Suamataia said. “The things he taught me even before he won his Outland trophy , and now he’s one of if not the best offensive tackle in the league. He taught me a lot.” He’s referring to Lions Left Tackle Penei Sewell who just inked a brand new deal from the Lions for four years, $112 million. It’s great to hear that Suamataia and Sewell are close because if Kingsley plays anything like his cousin then we got a steal with this kid.

He will fit in with the Chiefs at either tackle position, although I have a feeling Reid is going to give Suamataia every chance to win the starting left tackle job. I’m by no means an expert on offensive line play but from all the experts I’ve listen talk about him, he is a player that has immense potential, but will need some development in year one. If he can win the left tackle job and make an impression with the coaching staff, he has the potential to be a bookend at one of the most important positions in all of football.
Pick Grade: B+
