I wonder how Brett Veach has been doing this Spring? Trying to get ready for the draft during a pandemic sounds pretty stressful. Not to mention the time crunch, you know after winning the Super Bowl and all. He’s got some difficult decisions to make tonight during the NFL Draft. The elephant in the room is the future of their best defensive player: Chris Jones.

When it comes to Jones they have three options

  • Keep him long term and pay him over $20 million a season
  • Play him under the franchise tag and lose him next season for nothing
  • Trade him before or during the draft and possibly get a mid to high first round pick

I know Veach has been fielding calls and inquiries on Jones since the season ended. Jones is one of four players in the NFL with 9 or more sacks and 20 or more QB hits in the last two seasons. He’s an elite talent and the best defensive tackle in the game after Aaron Donald. That should command at minimum what the Colts gave up to get DeForest Buckner.

The highest pick I could see the Chiefs getting would be the 10 spot. Cleveland loves adding talent and I know GM John Dorsey would think long and hard about acquiring a guy he drafted originally back in 2016.

The Buccaneers at 14 would be a logical spot for the Chiefs to trade up. Tampa is trying to be all in this year. They just added Gronk to pair with Brady. They lost Gerald McCoy to the Cowboys so there’s a need in the interior d-line. If they add Jones and somehow get Shaquille Barrett back, they would challenge the Saints in that division no doubt.

Miami is a logical landing spot as well with their multitude of first-round picks. The Chiefs could slide into the 18th pick or the 26th pick. Miami could add some juice on their d-line next to Christian Wilkins. As long as the Dolphins get their QB with their first pick, they can do whatever they want with the rest.

The Chiefs would love to keep Chris Jones but they already won a ring. Their defensive line is one of their strongest units on the team. They can stand to lose Jones ONLY for a player they think can be special. Their d-line will be a solid unit with or without Jones in the lineup. They drafted Khalen Saunders last season in the third round for a reason. Derrick Nnadi makes plays against the run, something Chris Jones struggles with. And they re-signed Mike Pennell who was a big reason for the defensive turn around last year. Linebacker is a huge need and Patrick Queen would be exactly what they need. There’s been rumors about them being interested in Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs III. Whoever the pick is, it would be in the Chiefs best interest to get some extra picks to help build around the best quarterback in the world.
