I’ve been repping the Bulls my whole life. If you follow me on Facebook you’ve seen the picture of my little brother when we first brought him home. All the men in the family were dressed in Bulls gear head to toe. Being a 90’s kid, the peak of my Bulls fandom was in 2010. Man, what a year that was. Me and my homeboys were taking over McCullom Hall (people knew who we were don’t front). Derrick Rose was MVP. And the Bulls looked like title contenders. We all know what would later ensue, don’t make me get into details. The Bulls team I’m forced to call my own in 2017 is…not good. They would challenge for the D-league championship no doubt, but definitely not no NBA championship. I blame Fred Hoiberg in all honesty.
Yes, Bulls GM Gar Forman and John Paxson are incompetent at their jobs. They traded away Jimmy Butler in his prime. No one is giving then a pass. Honestly the organization as a whole should be canned. But for the sake of this blog, let me cook for a minute. My disdain for that man goes back to his days being a thorn in the side of Kansas basketball for a good run. His Iowa State teams were tough. They ran the floor. They were fast and would shoot at will. None of those compliments describe this current bulls team or any of the teams that he’s coached. Since 2015 his record the Bulls is 83-81 which isn’t terrible. He even took the Bulls to the playoffs last season even though they got dropped in the first round. Don’t be fooled. This man cannot coach NBA players. His personality ain’t cut out for this league. He’s too nice and friendly. Jimmy Butlwr called him out his first year on the job and said Fred wasn’t hard enough on the players. When have you ever heard of players telling the media that their coach isn’t coaching them hard enough? Time and time again Fred has shown me that he has lossed the reigns of his team. Just this past week Nikola Mirotic and Bobby Portis threw actual hands in practice. Check that, actually Portis was the only one throwing hands as Mirotic got knocked out for several minutes.
Would this have happened under Tom Thibedeau? Absolutely positively not. Not only does this bulls team have no identity on the court, their coach has no spine and continually let’s his players run the show. That will get you fired. At least it should. Unfortunately with the team in full rebuilding mode Fred might actually get to keep his job for now. Don’t get me wrong. I think the Bulls are trash right now but there’s potential there. Zach Lavine can be a star if he can stay healthy. Rookie Lauri Markkanen looks like his ceiling could be Pau Gasol. Um…Justin Holiday is a nice young talent. Uh….. Robin Lopez is a serviceable big man. I guess Kris Dunn can play I’m not convinced. Right now there’s a lot more questions than answers. At least they got their first win on Thursday night even though I’m not sure if beating Kent Bazemore and the depleted Atlanta Hawks counts as a NBA team. At least the Bulls will have some competition for last place in the Eastern conference.
