Coming off a World Series championship fans and pundits alike tried really hard to poke holes in the Royals roster. From day one of Spring Training people identifies right field as a weak spot in the lineup. In the American League, your corner outfielders are supposed to be your power source. Listening to my boys at 610 Sports radio, texters and callers on the show have wanted a new right fielder since the Alex Rios trial didn’t go according to plan. Well guys you got one and he was with us all along. Mr Zoombya himself. Jarrod Dyson finally has his chance to play everyday and man he’s living it up. Who cares if he only has 26 at-bats? He’s hitting .333 and roped 2 RBI doubles to add to his impressive start albeit in a second straight sloppy loss to the Angels. I hate to be the guy who claims they saw this coming conveniently when it’s working out but I could start to see a different Jarrod Dyson last season. I noticed that he was being more patient and getting deeper into counts. He had 14 walks in 200 at-bats in 2015. He had 22 walks in 260 at-bats in 2014. He could have easily passed that with more chances. His slugging % was a career high in seasons with at least 200 at-bats and his OPS was a point off his career high. So the offense was starting to come around. We knew how good of a defender he was but I don’t think other teams did. That Willie Mays style over-the-shoulder grab he made against the Tampa Bay Rays last summer after Alex Gordon went down was breath taking. For good measure he then proceeded to throw out the runner retreating back to first base. Behind his elite speed, his arm is his next best tool. He has a gun connected to his right shoulder and teams will start to figure that out when they get tired and being embarrassed by him. He threw out the Angels Kole Calhoun on Monday night trying to run first to third and it wasn’t close. Moose could have caught the ball, clapped his glove and still tagged out Calhoun. Dyson threw out four runners last year and already has two in just 8 games this season. Royals fans should be thrilled with their new acquisition in right field. If Dyson can keep up his level of play he might even force Ned to start leading him off instead of Escobar who should not be leading off for any MLB team. It was fun during the World Series run but eventually the law of averages will show that Escobar and Dyson should maybe flip spots in the lineup. But because Ned believes Escobar is a wizard or something he will continue to lead off until a change is absolutely necessary. For now though give Dyson a chance as the Royals new everyday right fielder.
