You critics continue to be wrong about our Royals boys in blue. Before the season started you guys were skeptical about the pitching staff. You didn’t believe Edinson Volquez and Ian Kennedy would be good enough to anchor the staff. Specifically you frowned at the Kennedy deal worth $70 million over 5 years. On paper it looks like they might have overpaid but I could see the match for the Royals. Any pitcher would love coming to play their home games in Kauffman stadium with the best defense in the league. Kennedy finished 4th in the Cy Young voting in 2011 when he won 21 games and posted a 2.88 ERA. Royals fan are seeing him regain that boss status in this early part of the year. Both Kennedy and Volquez have been well above average starters and their stats prove it. Their ERA’s are good enough for top 20 in the league. Kennedy has a 1.35 while Volquez, after last nights shut down performance,  has a 1.46. He’s 3-0 and looked fantastic shutting out the Tigers through 7 innings in route to a 4-0 win. This bodes well for the rest of the season. Something that looked like a weakness at the beginning of the season now has become a strength. Except for Chris Young, the Royals starters all have the potential to put up great numbers. Volquez and Kennedy look like front line starters and when you pair them with Yordano Ventura and Kris Medlen, you have a pitching staff that will outperform pre season predictions. That being said, it’s April but it’s hard not to notice the trend of good starting pitching. That’s what you have to do this early in the season. You can’t make conclusions 2 weeks into the season but you can follow trends. Right now the trend of stellar pitching from the starters is definitely a great sign.
